Monuments Galore!

Today was a full day! First stop Devils Tower.

Dad has always wanted to visit Devils Tower ever since he saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Driving here was very rainy and at times white out situations, so we were very leery as to if we would even see the tower. This tower is an astounding geological feature that protrudes out of the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. It’s sacred to the Northern Plain Indians, but at least we saw it.
Next stop was the historical town of Deadwood. Mom and dad went to Saloon 10 which is where Wild Bill Hickok took his last breath playing poker. He was holding a pair of eights and a pair of aces, now forever called the dead mans hand. Dad decided to play a hand of blackjack and was lucky today. He won $30 dollars which paid for our next adventure…. parking at Crazy Horse (this is not a National Monument).
Chico and I were lucky this time and got to go in and see everything here at Crazy Horse. They love dogs! We saw this presentation from Brave Girl , her Indian name and she had us repeating all these Indian words but the only thing I remember from here presentation is that her people do not like to be referred to as Sioux because it means unfriendly or snake. They want to be referred to as Dakota or Lakota.
This will be a beautiful monument whenever it’s finished. It was supposed to take 30 years but it’s been 71 years and you can see it isn’t even close to being finished!

Next stop Mount Rushmore and oh no, this is what we saw, so cloudy. But then, the angels sang and……
There they were! They were much smaller than imagined, but incredible none the less.

We ended up here in Keystone at the K bar and S Lodge. Beautiful place…night night!

Next stop Sioux Falls…
