Cordele calls itself the Watermelon capital of the world and it has some interesting history. In 1864 the area that is now Cordele served as the temporary capital of Georgia during the last days of the Confederacy. But that’s not why we are here. We are here because our destination of Pitts, GA (my moms mothers birth home) still doesn’t have a hotel, motel or any lodging.
While we were in Cordele, mom and dad made the best of it. They went to Daphne’s Lodge for dinner which was written up in Southern Living as one of the top ten restaurants serving catfish. Guess what mom and dad had?? The catfish of course, with hush puppies, cheesy grits and coleslaw. They also had the fried dill pickles with ranch dressing.Cute little place, out in the middle of nowhere. The next morning we headed out to Pitts Georgia to visit moms cousins who have started this really cool business called Oliver Farms Artesian Oils. I’m checking out the sunflowers on the building. Oliver Farms grows fields full of them and they are so beautiful when they are at their peek. They don’t last long, but check out their website which is below for pictures. This is Oliver Farms store front called 31072 Station. In case you are wondering 31072 is Pitts zip code and this used to be gas station.
Oliver Farms produces cold pressed, unrefined, non-gmo oils and gluten free seed and nut flours. Sunflower Oil, Green peanut Oil, Pecan Oil and a few other oils. These quickly caught the attention of foodies and chefs including the likes of Alice Waters (Chez Panisse, Oakland). They were also featured on the PBS show Taste Makers Artesian Oils.
They won many awards. On Moms right is her cousin Clay (he was in the PBS special) and his wife Valerie and to her left is Clays mom Jurice and of course you know dad. Me and Chico were in the office while they took pictures.
Love this GA trip! Canβt wait to order oil and flour from your cousin π

That would be wonderful. I bought a bunch since I had to get rid of everything before we left!
